NEW WVBC SUMMER LEAGUES COMING TOGETHER

The WVBC league plans are coming together with a nice list of players in both the Advanced Beginner and Intermediate/Advanced categories. Play will begin on Thursday July 16th at 9am.

We have been approved for Canal and Odell as our locations.  Twenty people have signed up so far so assures five tables being used at each location.

There is still room for 4 more players and couple of advanced beginner subs to help cover summer travel. Contact us if you would like to join. We'd love to have you!

Summer Drop - In Play Opportunity for Women

Summer time brings lots of changes in activities in The Villages with people returning North and lots of folks traveling. For those of us staying behind this opens up some playing opportunities we don't get the rest of the year.

One of those opportunities comes from the Wednesday afternoon advanced league that Char & Mary Ciesco run at La Hacienda. While they are not in session for the summer they become a Drop -In play location where an organized round robin is set up each week.
Here are the particulars:

  • It's pay $1 to play each week & it's paid out in purse money
  • Arrive by 12:45 to be on the roster
  • It's singles play unless more than 12 people show up then they double up
This is not for the faint of heart! You will be playing against the likes of Char, Deb Clifford, Mary Ciesco and others of their ilk but it's a challenge and lots of fun! Step up your game over the summer and join in.

Hope to see you there on Wednesdays!

WVBC Continues To Grow!

The WVBC is now 10 weeks old and we are so happy to report that we have been met with resounding support. With a few events under our belts including the general assembly and Intro to Women's Billiards we have increased our contact list from an original 260+- to 335 women who want to remain on our contact list and receive regular updates and we have increased the female membership of the Villages Billiards Club by 10. Hoorah to us all!

Your WVBC Team is working hard and continues to address the areas of interest revealed in the survey to bring you events and activities that benefit all of us as well as our club & sport.

Thank you all for being out there with your support helping to make billiards and our community as great as it is!

Movie & Pizza Night Glitch!

The WVBC Movie & Pizza Night started out Great.....

Movie Night drew it's sell out crowd for a fun time last Saturday night. All went smoothly with the pizza and everyone thoroughly enjoyed Don "Preacher" Feeney's pre-show presentation. Then came the movie!

The Color of Money opens with soft voices so we attempted to increase the volume to overcome the mumbling and whispering. To our disappointment, the Canal Rec Center sound system failed and though we did get sound to return, it was not loud enough for anyone to hear. After a few uncomfortable minutes of being polite, people began to bleed out of the room until we discovered about 20 loyal supporters remained in the room.

ARGHHHhhhhhh DISASTER!

We left our event with a feeling of great high for the success of interest, good food, good company and of course Preacher's great presentation but a feeling of total disappointment with the end result.

The following Monday the VBC BOD gathered for their monthly meeting and we all agreed that YOU deserve more!

The success of our event had brought a nice donation from the WVBC to the "EXPO" fund so we unanimously decided to take the money raised and re-run the entire event, food and all, free of charge to all registrants! We are working towards a re-run in June and as soon as we receive confirmation for our permit we will notify all attendees. Oh and BTW, at a different rec center :-)

More to come on the re-run......

VBC Looking for Help!

The Villages Billiards Club is looking for people to help with the monthly 50/50 drawing and with clean up after our meal at the monthly meeting event.
Past secretary Lyn Hultz did a great job with this important activity which helps fund our club activities but she is passing the torch for the monthly 50/50 drawing and we need a replacement.

Additionally, Club VP Larry Russo and wife Mary need help with clean up after the meal. It's not a big task if a few extra people are willing to help out but makes for a quick burn out if two people are left to this task each month. The VBC & the Russo's would be grateful for the extra hands especially from those of you who may play in the early tournament session.

If anyone is interested in taking on either of these tasks or helping with them some of the time, please contact the WVBC or Phil D'Angelo.

WVBC Accepting Sign Ups For New Summer Leagues Now!

The WVBC is accepting sign ups for the first league session which will begin on Thursday, July 16th, 9:00am and run through August 27th. Exact location will be announced after the permit has been received but we will be requesting a central location.

If you are an Advanced Beginner or an Intermediate player and would like to join the WVBC league Summer Session or be a sub, please contact us.

You are an Advanced Beginner if know the rules of the game (most of them), are able to pocket balls, know what a safe is and are trying to use them, and can finish a game in less than a half hour when playing someone at your skill level. This is not a league for people who are still learning basic cue and shot making skills.

You may be questioning which group you belong in. No worries. As a result, we decided that ALL who sign up in either the advanced beginners or the intermediates will play a round robin format all together the first two weeks of play. This will allow us to seed the players and divide the group depending on how you place in the round robin matches. We hope this will make for the most accurate playing field for each group.  At the end of each league session we will evaluate whether someone should move up or down as necessary to periodically level the playing field. It’s never fun for anyone to be either too high or too low in the field and each of our games is always changing so our hope is that this will help make it more fun as well as competitive, and keep the  the playing field level for all.

Ok so here is our format & rules of play
  • Singles 8 ball
  • first two weeks of session to be round robin for ALL participants to seed players in either the Adv. Beg. or Int. group
  • There will be NO MAKE UP Games. IF you can not play you will need a sub.
  • Games will be scored by number of game wins
  • BCA rules will apply
  • Each person will periodically be asked to turn in the scores to the league leaders at the end of a league day so no one person has to be responsible for it every week.
We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Women's Billiard Playing Opportunity for All Levels of Players

Larry Berg runs a Sunday night Mixed Doubles League which will begin it's next session on Sunday night, June 7th. He is in need of some women players for both the regular league as well as subs.

This is a handicap league that runs Sunday evenings in Hibiscus, Allamanda and Canal locations. It is divided into three levels of players and handicapped to make it fair for less accomplished players at each level. At the end of each season and depending on your standing, teams are moved up or down to again try to level the playing field.

This is a good group or competitive players and a great opportunity if you are looking to add a mixed league to your activities. You do not have to have a partner. Larry has some men who do not have partners, though he is looking for more men as well.

If this is of interest to you you can contact Larry Berg directly at ljberg63@outlook.com

He can also be reached by phone at 352-753-2253.

Did You Think Billiards Was Just For Men?

Did You Think Billiards Was Just For Men? Think Again!

WVBC is calling ALL Ladies of The Villages to come and bring a friend to learn about the sport of Billiards and its many opportunities for women on Saturday, May 9th at Canal Recreation Center from 3 – 4pm. The WVBC wants to encourage women to come to the tables to learn a fun sport. Billiards offers social and competitive opportunities, and a challenge to the brain helping keep the mind sharper and healthier.

The presentation will include information about the sport, handouts listing free lessons and playing opportunities for all skill levels, and additional information about groups and upcoming events.

The Villages can boast 21 recreation centers having a total of 121 billiards tables for residents to play on. Many of those who play are women, and the number continues to grow. Part of the WVBC’s mission is to bring more women to the tables as they share their enthusiasm for their sport.

Hope to see you there!
