VBC Monthly Meeting & Tournament Next Friday July 31st

I'd like to say WELCOME to many new faces that have been seen at the tables lately; at Sharon Lomano's Saturday morning group at Big Cypress each week, at Gale's group at Chula Vista on Tuesday mornings and the new WVBC leagues are bringing together faces who have been playing for a while but I have either never seen before or rarely seen playing. How rewarding it is to see that the WVBC is fulfilling our mission of increasing participation in the sport of Billiards in The Villages in a number of ways!
Welcome to the many new players who have joined the Villages Billiards Club not only to become a part of our organization but as a show of support for our efforts on your behalf.

2ND Women's VBC Tournament Results

The VBC has now completed it's second tournament for "Women Only" 9 Ball event held on Friday July 24th at La Hacienda. Competition was tough and a good time had by all!

Nine ball offers a different strategy than 8 ball and includes the same frustrations with scratches, ball in hand and missed easy shots. It's more often a faster paced and quicker game than 8 ball.

So here is how it went down...
  • Wendy Lord & Glenda Supino won 11 games each.
  • Lynne Burke won 10 games
  • Char Potochar, Marie Weigle & Gale Bellew won 9 games each
In the end, Wendy & Glenda played a final sudden death game which Glenda won for 1st place.

Those who won 9 games lagged and determine that the 4th place winner was Char.

So the final results are:
1st - Glenda Supino
2nd - Wendy Lord
3rd - Lynne Burke
4th - Char Potochar

Congratulations to ALL!

On a special note, one of the contestants won a game by sinking the 9 ball on the break!

The next VBC Women's Only Tournament will be 8 Ball on October 23rd.

"Intro to Women's Billiards"

Do you have a friend who may be interested in billiards but hasn't made the leap yet? Or have you met someone who has just moved to The Villages and trying to find a new activity to participate in?
The WVBC is repeating a successful presentation called "Intro to Women's Billiards". It is meant to inform women residents especially new ones, of the opportunities for the sport of billiards in the Villages.

ALL Ladies of The Villages are invited to come and bring a friend to learn about the sport and its many opportunities for women on Saturday, August 1st at Colony Cottage Recreation Center from 3 – 4pm.
The WVBC wants to encourage women to come to the tables to learn a fun sport. Billiards offers social and competitive opportunities, and a challenge to the brain helping keep the mind sharper and healthier.

The presentation will include information about the sport, handouts listing free lessons and playing opportunities for all skill levels, and additional information about groups and upcoming events.

The Villages can boast 21 recreation centers having a total of 121 billiards tables for residents to play on. Many of those who play are women, and the number continues to grow. Part of the WVBC’s mission is to bring more women to the tables as they share their enthusiasm for their sport.

Hope to see you there!

CASINO NIGHT A COMPLETE SUCCESS!

The first WVBC major fundraiser is under our belt and what a FUN Night we all had.......

Not more than a week before the event was to take place I was looking at a grim count of 50+ people who had signed up and I thought sure all the hard work that was going into it was not going to give us a very worthy net gain. In the end we raised over $900 for the VBC Annual Expo Event! The WVBC Team did a great job of executing the event and are very
proud of their hard work!

To my astonishment I am happy to report that we rallied and ended up with 93 people in attendance for a terrific night of fun & games. Once people took places at their gaming tables there was very little movement all night long. Everyone seemed engrossed in their games with many a serious gamers face but many smiles when luck struck as well. I did see lots of smiles overall but the loudest and most cheerful bunch were those playing the dice games who regularly would throw up their hands, laugh, hoot, and holler as they played their games. In fact there were by standers wanting to get into the game but no one was giving up their seats! Someone requested adding a table which I doubted would be possible but when I brought it to Zam's attention, she immediately went into customer service mode and added another table of dice games for more to enjoy. We thank her for her willingness to please.

A BIG thanks goes out to Nissan Representative and Villages Billiards Club member Bobbi Yush, for making us aware of this opportunity with Nissan as a partial sponsor and introducing us to Zam, owner operator of Shazam who runs gaming events in the Villages. Additionally, this could not have been done without our many volunteers. I hope you will find a moment to say Thanks to each of them as I am doing here on behalf of the WVBC/VBC and our efforts to bring you our Annual Billiard Expo.

THANK YOU ALL!

WVBC THURSDAY MORNING LEAGUE LOOKING FOR SUBS

The WVBC Leagues will begin this Thursday morning at 9am. We are still in need of some subs. All of us keep very busy lives her in The Villages and between travel and medical appointments we often have to break commitments.

If you can finish a game in under a half hour and would like to  be on our sub list, please email me with your phone number(s) so players are able to reach you.

Thanks!

Room for Three More Players in WVBC Leagues to Begin on Thursday July 16th

Ok so it's taken some time but we finally will begin the new WVBC Leagues on Thursday at 9am. The slow start has caused a few people to have to drop out for one reason or another. So we have room for three more players. You do have to be able to finish an 8 ball game in a half hour or less in order to finish the required games in the allotted time frame. If you are interested, email me ASAP so you can start this week and participate in the initial round robin.

One of the complaints I hear about leagues is that the playing field is not always very even. It's never fun for a player to either always be facing someone who will win 4 out of 5 games nor is it fun for the winner. We are trying to overcome that by seeding our initial players by doing a round robin competition during the first two weeks of play. It won't be perfect but we will definitely get a feel for where each player stands within the group based on their initial performance.

Here's how it's going to work. Week one we will play short rack 8 ball with each person playing each other once. The games will be scored based on how many balls you make. Whether you win the game or not will not matter as much as how many balls you make in each game. Week two, we will do a switch. Half from each location will move to the other rec. center. This will not allow each player to play every other player in two weeks time even with a short rack, but it will give us a good indication of where each falls on the ladder. After results are in, the top half scores will play each other for the remainder of the session while the other half will play together each at the two different locations.

Once the first session is complete at the end of August, we will adjust the ladder as necessary to keep the playing field as level as possible.

I look forward to seeing our leagues at play as we attempt to bring you what you asked for!

Women's Only Cue Stick Clinic Tuesday, July 14th

Our Cue Stick Clinic is almost here and our presenters are all lined up!

Join us Tuesday, July 14th at 2pm for our Women's Only Cue Stick Clinic to learn about cue sticks, how to choose one, and how to care for them including when you need a new tip and where you can get that done.

Bill Lord will lead our presentation and go over cue stick basics including cue stick anatomy. How to choose a new stick will also be covered so that we know and understand what to look for when considering a new purchase. Fred Caprio  and Bill have been teaching billiards in the Villages for a long time, are easy to talk to and are always helpful and supportive of women who play billiards.

Dick Johnson will bring his many years of knowledge from selling  cue sticks to answer questions and Buddy Nichols and Mike Kimball will also be on hand to  cover cue & tip maintenance as well as when and where you can get cue tip replacements here in the Villages.

Larry Russo will have the Villages Billiards Club Pro-Shop on display and can answer questions about what the Pro-Shop offers and how you can save  money when purchasing new equipment from the VBC.

GANGS OF NY - A FUN TIME FOR ALL!

The WVBC "Uptown Girls"

Gale Bellew, Annie T., Joy Mrozak, Sue Moore, Peggy Werner, Sheila McDonald, Judy Schmidt & Maryann Ross

A good time was had by all as they say....

Your WVBC "Uptown Girls" team did a great job and we had a good time doing it! Our best team was Annie T. & Sue Moore who won all but one of their matches. Congrats to them both!

We laughed a lot and had fun in the tournament ending in the middle of the field which wasn't bad considering the Irish Gang was an all male team & stacked with the likes of The Preacher, Tom Weldon, Jim Gary and more.

There were many women represented as well. The costumes were very entertaining and I in fact had no clue that Glenda Supino was under that long hair, black cap and sun glasses! Here are a few shots of the evenings sights.

Enjoy!
